The language of Abū Nuwās’ (qasidas) is grammatically sound and based on the old Arab traditions. poetry is full of complicated lyrics.
He is best known for his khamriyyat (wine poems) and pe-de-rasty. His collected poems, or Diwan, includes around 1,500 works that explore pleasure, sexuality, especially homosexuality, and religion, his themes, however, are drawn from urban life, not the desert;
During the time of Harun al-Rashid, Abu Nuwas went to Baghdad where he developed and practiced his wine poems.
His verse is laced with humour and irony, reflecting the genial yet cynical outlook of the poet, who spent much of his life in pursuit of pleasure.
