ANALYSIS
The following article discusses TikTok’s €1bn investment aimed at constructing the company’s first data centre in Finland. The plan forms a part of Project Clover, which is a €12bn European infrastructure initiative. The decision was made as an attempt to eliminate concerns stemming from European regulators regarding data sovereignty, at the same time storing user data within Europe.
The data centre in Finland follows the operational launch of the one built in Norway and will consequently supplement data centres in Ireland and the US. Moreover, TikTok is in negotiations with Brazil about data centre projects involving renewable energy. The investment corresponds to the company’s expansion plans in the future, including the launch of TikTok Shop in 3 major European markets alongside global regulatory scrutiny in terms of data security.
