19. gs. Beigās vācu fiziķis Otto Lēmans un austriešu botāniķis Fridrihs Reinicers, ievēroja, ka dažu šķidrumu pagarās molekulas mēdz izkārtoties paralēlos slāņos un to savstarpējais izkārtojums ir visai regulārs. Zinātnieki visā pasaulē šādus šķidrumus sintezēja aizvien vairāk, un drīz vien tiem radās īpašs nosaukums – šķidrie kristāli.
