In the second half of the 19th century England passed into the stage of imperialism. The social wrongs of that time became so deep that few authors dared to speak of them.
The early 20th century English fiction was greatly influenced by various decadent philosophical theories which led to the creation of works marked by crude imperialist tendencies and great pessimism.
