The struggle for civil rights was a battle for the rights instituted in the Constitution; a promise betrayed. Many events influenced the struggle which can be traced throughout the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950's and the 1960's. Voting rights, assured through the 15th amendment, were denied to blacks through violence and harassment. Education was not fully guaranteed to blacks, and many did not receive any at all. Public facilities remained segregated, with none being close to "separate but equal". …
