Flotile izpētīja Laplatas līci un Paranas upes lejteci. Pirms došanās ekspedīcijā iepazinies ar vecām kartēm, Magelāns bija pārliecināts, ka tieši šeit atrodas jūras šaurums. Taču viņa ziņa izrādījās maldi: tā bija tikai ļoti plata upe. Tas izjauca visus Magelāna plānus un sarežģīja ekspedīcijas turpmāko likteni. Magelāns bija spiests virzīties tālāk uz D. Viņš izpētīja vairāk nekā 2000 km piekrasti, ko nosauca par Patagoniju.
