Understanding the context; Subject, ideas, thoughts of the text/film:
The main context of this book is queen Victorias era in England. Social hierachy in the 19th century English society, as well as the ability of an individual to look past the social order, prejudices and the norms that have been created to form a succesful social hierarchy.
I really enjoyed this book because the author was able to persuade the reader while at the same time teaching valuable lessons through the actions of the books characters. The main character or the protagonist, Pip (Philipp) , goes through numerous different changes, the most important being his change of status in the social hierarchy from working class to upper class. Because Pip must reach and fulfill these “great expectations” which mean him becoming a gentleman, his character changes very drastically, leading to the plot. While Philipp is undergoing these series of mental and environmental changes, a certain lady catches his eye. I think that this book stands out from other literary works are the lessons and themes each reader can take away with him/ her. Another important thing this book embodies is that it reminds us as a society that we should never judge anyone based on their wealth or social class but rather by their unique character and life values.…
