e. 1859 Elected as Governor of Texas
f. Toyed with idea of becoming Prez of U.S., but never seriously
g. Wanted TX to become independent again instead of becoming a confederate state
h. Houston knew the south wouldn't win a Civil War
i. Becoming independent may keep it out of the Civil War
j. 1861 Civil War started, he refused to swear allegiance to the Con.
