Cobra
The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (COBRA) applies to individuals covered under SMC health and dental plans. Federal law allows individuals and dependents covered under these plans to continue coverage for a specified period of time. Terminating employees are allowed to extend coverage for 18 months or until they become eligible for coverage by another group plan; whichever occurs first. Coverage for medical and/or dental plans may be extended 36 months for dependents who lose coverage due to divorce, graduation, age, death, or marriage. Substantial premiums are required to be paid by the participant in order to continue coverage under COBRA.
