POLITICS
The Cook Islands have been a colony of New Zealand since 1901.
For 65 years the Cook Islands had missionary rule followed by a further 77 years of colonial rule. Since 1965 the Cook Islands have enjoyed fully democratic internal self Government in free association with New Zealand: Cook Islands is fully responsible for internal affairs: New Zealand retains responsibility for external affairs and defence, and integrates the labour and capital markets in consultation with the cook Islands.

Recently there has been a dramatic increase in political patronage through government jobs. Okotai. T 2003 supported by De Jong M 2003).
The current Political party intends to "reduce the number of seats in Parliament, streamline parliamentary procedures, make Select Committees more accountable and reduce the parliamentary term from five to four years.
