The HGP can be used to go further, we can use it to genetically modify food to portect us against disease and create plants that are resistant to disease, drought and insects (already being done). It is said if this were dine we would be able to fees the hungry of the world.
Although it would give us the ability to do such things, the question remains, "should we?". Is genetically modified food safe? Another question being asked is if we'll have access to our genetic information and should genes be patented? Is science progressing faster than society is willing to accept its advances?
It seems with the huge breakthrough of the HGP there are as many unanswered ethical questions as there are promises of great things coming of the discovery. And as a society we still may have a long way to go.
