Overall, communication is key to building trust, developing effective guidelines and principles, and to ensure the prevention and containment of disease. However, it is nevertheless important to note that good communication practices will not substitute for poor planning or misconceptions (Nicola et al., 2020).
Nicola et al. (2020) also claims that planning is key in any national crisis and especially in a pandemic that affects every element in society; effective coordination is therefore essential. This coordination must happen at a national, regional and local level with lines of communication between each.
Successful leaders cut through the clutter of conflicting data and opinions, identify the areas that need attention, and allocate effort and resources accordingly. They quickly develop and communicate a point of view on the best path forward, providing a sense of direction. Effective leaders during a crisis are also flexible in changing course, adopting novel, more promising ideas, while abandoning dogma or prior diktat (Kaul et al., 2020).
To conclude, all these key factors correspond to each other and a leader/group of leaders during times of unprecedented crisis, embracing adaptive capacity in evidence-based strategies can help stopping this pandemic or at least help prevent any more damage caused by COVID-19. Good leadership has many qualities and by implementing them the right way and following examples led by other countries, the pandemic will be stopped.
