The most popular sports in 1920s’ were boxing, baseball, horseracing and football. (Kyvig) Basketball, not as popular as other sports, was invented in the winter of 1891 by James Naismith. At that time, the game was disorganized. With rules varying from game to game making basketball unexciting for audience. To bring some continuity to the sport many people tried to be pioneers and bring in new ideas; one of them was Jim Furey. Furey organized the first professional basketball team, the Original Celtics, and changed the standards for professional basketball teams. As a team, Original Celtics accomplished successes that no one had done before, historically becoming known as a team that set the fundamentals for nowadays-professional basketball.
When the 1920s’ decade began, basketball was still something new for most people. Although this new game had attracted more people than expected it could not gain as much attention as other popular sports as football, baseball, and boxing did. An article “Basketball” in American Decades states some of the reason why basketball still in beginning of decade of 1920s’could not achieve attention from audience and spectators. In its adolescence, basketball had difficulties that tended to discourage both athletic participation and spectator interest in the game. …
