A stethoscope is a medical device used to listen to the internal sounds of the human body, primarily the heart and lungs.
The concept of the stethoscope began in 1816 when French physician René Laennec rolled a piece of paper into a tube to listen more clearly to a patient's chest sounds. Laennec coined the term "stethoscope" from the Greek words "stethos" (chest) and "skopein" (to view). Later, George P. Camman from New York introduced a stethoscope with earpieces for both ears. In 1960, David Littmann significantly improved acoustic performance with his stethoscope design.
