The aim of this work is to analyze the poem of John Donne “Hymn to God, my God, in my Sickness”. John Donne is remembered today as the leading exponent of a style of poetry called “metaphysical poetry,” which flourished in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Before I start analyzing I should mention that “metaphysical poetry is concerned with the whole experience of a man, but the intelligence, learning and seriousness of the poets means that the poetry is about the profound areas of experience – especially about love, romantic and sensual, about man’s relationship with God – the eternal perspective, and, to a less extent, about pleasure, learning and art” (3:541).…
