INTRODUCTION
Throughout centuries the port has formed the basis for prosperity and well-being of Liepaja. The port has developed mostly due to the advantageous geographical location of Liepaja – as Liepaja is the port closest to Scandinavia and Western Europe, it provides effective access to the markets of the Baltic Sea region and CIS countries, and as a result the port is developing rapidly as one of transit and logistics centres in the Baltic Sea region.
The Port of Liepaja is located 18,5 miles S of Akmeņrags Cape near the city of Liepaja. The port is protected from the sea by moles and breakwaters. The three port entrances are located between them: north, middle and south gates. At present only two harbour entrances are used for serving commercial ships:
o Southern, designed depth of fairway 11.0m, width 100m;
o Middle, designed depth of fairway 10.5m, width 100m.
Minimum depth on the south leading lines is 10m, on the Loču (Pilot) Leading Line and in the Tirdzniecības Chanel - 6,2m alongside yacht mooring places - 3,8 - 4,4m.
Liepaja is one of the few unfreezing ports on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is an essential advantage allowing carrying on unhindered and free traffic also during the winter months.
The Liepaja port is characterized by developed port and transport infrastructure, which allows fast and effective servicing of land and sea transport.
The port territory was developed to its present shape over the past ten years, during which the redundant military structure was pulled down, cargo storage areas were developed, and modern covered warehouses and cargo handling terminals were erected. The Port Authority has implemented a number of designs by reconstructing the port hydrotechnic structures, dredging the aquatorium and fairways, as well as building a new port access motor road. On the basis of common development of the terminals and the port, a modern transport infrastructure has been developed in the port, which allows providing effective handling of railway and road haulage freight.
Port overland territory in the Western part of the town covers 370 ha, of which abt.170 ha are used for port services. The port is connected to the engineering - technical communications of the town.
The port harbourage area and its adjacent territory are divided into four areas - Free port, Winter port, Trade and Karosta (Military) Canal. Each of these areas has is own specialization, which is determined by the parameters of the port harbourage area and the quays, the area and the location of the adjacent territory, historical and present day functions of use.
