On compte en France plus de 2000 musées. Le mot « musée » garde le souvenir des Muses, neuf déesses protectrices de tous les arts. Il y avait à Athène un temple consacré aux Muses, qui portait le nom de « Mouseïon ». Au III –e siècle avant notre ère, le roi d’Egypte, Ptolémée I-er, fonda en Alexandrie le célèbre « Mouseïon » centre d’études scientifiques. Les romains , à leur tour, donnèrent aux éstablissements analogues le nom de « Museum ».
Il y a 100 musées a Paris.
