Excursion starts from Laimas watch, which is very popular meeting place. Description:
("Let's meet at the Laima clock!") or ("Rendezvous at the Laima clock!") - these are very typical phrases for latvians. We all are arranging there a lot of meetings :-)))
And this yellow-brown clock in front of the Freedom Monument has been a meeting place since it was erected by social democrats in 1924.
For decades it has advertised Laima chocolate(the best chocolate in Latvia!), and sweet romance has started here. :-)
The Laima clock was recently repaired and it's time now is synchronised twice a day by satelite.
Bastion Hill (Bastejkalns) by Shofja
The Bastion Hill was created from 1857 to 1859 to replace the old defensive sand bulwark.
Nowadays within the Bastion Hill precincts are memorial stones to five people who were killed by Soviet bullets during the January 1991 disturbances. Among the dead were camera operators who where documenting these events.
The Bastion Hill is very popular place for locals.
