6.1 How freely are parties able to form and recruit members, engage with the public and campaign for office?
The law On Political Parties, in force since 1 January, 2007 regulates structure, liquidation and reorganization of political parties and the basic principles of party activity. Political parties in Latvia can form freely, the number of founders of the party should not be less than 200, they should reach the age of 18 and be the citizens of Latvia. Political parties are allowed to form alliances.
After the Reform of Political Parties, held in 2007, a political party becomes a legal entity after the registration in The Register of Political Parties. The members of the party could be any citizen of Latvia or European Union, non-citizens and residents of Latvia, who reached the age of 16. Every political party, except party alliances, by 1 March annually should submit data about the number of members and their citizenship to the Register of Political Parties.…
