Coronary heart disease – Occurs due to build up of fat in the arteries which can lead to increased blood pressure and heart attacks. Diets high in saturated fat increase the risk of heart disease. Benefit - A low fat diet reduces the risk of the arteries becoming clogged with fat and reduces the risk of heart disease, although fat is required in the diet it is in moderation with the majority of fat being made up from unsaturated fat.
Malnutrition – Occurs when an individual lack the recommended nutrients to be healthy causing spots, bad breath and exhaustion, it may be the early signs of anorexia or bulimia. Benefit – Ensuring the right food groups and nutrients are eaten helps to provide a healthy glow and lots of energy to function.
Diabetes – There are two types, type 1 is associated with diet and can be treated by changing what and individual eats. Type 2 is associated with obesity. Benefit – Diets low in fat reduces the risk of obesity and therefore lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Anaemia – Caused by a lack of iron in the diet and often leads to the feeling of constant tiredness and fatigue. Benefit – Eating a varied diet including
Lean meat, eggs and dried fruit can reduce the chances of anaemia.
Emotional and Behavioural – Eating too many processed foods, fizzy drinks, sweets which contain additives has been linked to hyperactivity in children as well as asthma and allergies. Benefit – avoiding processed foods and cooking with fresh products will reduce the number of additives. This is more likely to lead to alertness and stable behaviour.
