TIME HORIZON - PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
Trompenaars also looked at the time horizon of the different cultures. Here he looked at two point, firstly if they a rather sequential or synchronic, and secondly how much importance the three variables past, present and future have.
As can be seen in the graphic above, both USA and Germany are to some extent synchronic, but differ in their importance of the three variables. USA is more focusing on the future, while almost neglecting the past; Germany is working mainly in the present, while assigning less, but about the same importance to future and past.
This is also true for the two companies in question. The Action Company is trying to make most of the time that's there, but clearly always looks into the future and develops new ideas, while in the Multi Company everything is highly organised and there is more emphasis of planning, scheduling and punctuality of the present.
SUB-CONCLUSION
When we would simply look at the two theoretical models of Hofstede and Trompenaars we would not see a big difference between the two national cultures involved. Both are western cultures and the scores they have in the two models might vary a bit but overall they are similar.
But after we took a closer look at the two companies themselves and analysed the national cultural dimensions, we noticed that the two company's cultures differ a lot.
