After a total of 27 years spent in prison, Mandela was released on May 10, 1994. This was the year he also began working as South Africa’s first democratically elected President. Furthermore, as he had promised, Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President, though he continued to work with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund he had set up in 1995 and established the Nelson Mandela Foundation and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation. On 5 December 2013, he passed away, leaving us with memories and his long lasting legacy.
In conclusion, in my eyes, Nelson Mandela has become an international emblem of dignity and forbearance. He never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality, and learning. He used his voice and remarkable leadership skills to change the world for better and despite terrible provocation, he never answered racism with racism. And again as said on his foundations website - his life is an inspiration to all who are oppressed and deprived; to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation.
