My purpose of choosing this topic was mainly conditioned by the fact that actually I know little about interpreting, the way it is performed in everyday life situations, and interpreter’s job as such. To learn more about interpreting and how it functions in the real life situations I first resorted to different sources in the Internet but there I only found whether very general or, on the contrary, very specialized information. The latter, I suppose, was meant for experienced interpreters working in this sphere for years and it was written in a sophisticated language, not comprehensible for a would-be interpretor. Eventually, after searching the Net, I came to realize that the best friend of a prospective translator and an interpreter, nevertheless, is a book, so I begun zealously wade through a large pile of manuals and reference books on translation and interpreting (and there I found everything I was interested in to write about).
In my paper I will describe for the most part different types of interpreting and qualites an interpreter should have; I will touch upon other topics related to interpreting as well. In this study I will briefly set out each of the above mentioned types.
Interpreting is becoming an increasingly common activity that is now an essential part of human interaction at all levels. More and more people are employed as interpreters in government and public agencies, non governmental organizations, and private industry. In developing countries – and sometimes also in the most developed countries – they are are underpaid, udertrained, and their work is unappreciated (the information I found in the discussion groups in the Net).…
An extract: 'Translation and interpretation is not merely a matter of substituting words in one language for words in another. It is a matter of understanding the thought expressed in one language and then explaining it using the resources of another language. In other words, what an interpreter does is change words into meaning, and then change meaning back into words of a different language'.
