Conclusions
Periphrasis is a stylistic device that refers to the use of a multi-word expression in place of a single-word one. Although the longer word-string may contain words that do not directly relate to the one-word expression, the meaning remans identical; therefore, it may be used for various purposes. In some cases, the periphrasis may be employed to elaborate the meaning behind terms that require additional knowledge, in other – writers use it purely as stylistic means.
The goal of this mini-research was to analyse texts concerning Latvian diasporas and make conclusions its use as well as readers’ knowledge and preferences. Periphrasis can be used for different purposes ranging from conscious choice of the author in order to clarify some ideas to the readers, to its being used as stylistic means. The survey revealed that most of the respondents have some basic knowledge about periphrasis and do not mind its use in texts with minority of those who does not know anything about it.
However, there were number of limitations that influenced the results of the analysis and survey. …
