1.1. Latvian Railway Infrastructure Aspects
Rail transport is one of the most promising modes of land transport considering both security and ecology aspects, and it is the basis for the export of Latvian transport and logistics services, and for the efficient operation of other economic sectors. The rail freight volumes constitute around 49% of the country’s total land transport volume (Railway, 2023).
Geographically speaking, the railways in Latvia do not span across most of the country. The proportion of domestic rail transport in Latvia accounts for only about 4 %, which can be explained by the comparatively short distances of travel within the country.
