Tahiti Islands, officially known as French Polynesia, is a collection of over 100 islands in the South Pacific. The main island is Tahiti, with its capital city of Papeete, is the largest of a collection of high volcanic islands in the Society Islands which is the main tourist destination. Off shore, less than ten minutes by plane, is the beautiful island of Moorea. The most popular island to visit is Bora Bora, slightly commercial but none-the-less breathtaking with a splendid lagoon. Between the two are the less visited but interesting islands of Huahine and the twin islands of Raiatea and Tahaa with good sailing.
The more distant Tuamotu Group comprises of lots of low lying coral atolls scattered in shallow turquoise lagoons and is popular with scuba diving enthusiasts. Even more remote is the Marquesas in the north are a remote collection of rugged high islands with cliffs tumbling straight to the ocean floor. Over one thousand kilometers from Tahiti is the seldom visited Austral and Gambier group of islands in the south are rarely visited by tourists.…
